Every vehicle on the job needs its own policy.

Personal auto insurance excludes business use. Commercial auto covers vehicles owned, leased, or regularly used for your business — protecting you, your drivers, third parties, and cargo from collision, liability, and physical damage claims.

What's Covered

What this policy responds to

  • Third-party liability for injuries or property damage caused by your vehicle
  • Collision coverage for damage to your own vehicle
  • Comprehensive coverage — theft, fire, vandalism, weather, animal strikes
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist protection
  • Hired and non-owned auto liability (for rented or employee-owned vehicles used on business)
  • Cargo and contents in transit (check sub-limits for high-value loads)

Exclusions

What it typically doesn't cover

  • Personal use of a vehicle not declared on the policy
  • Wear and tear, mechanical breakdown, or tire damage
  • Racing or off-road use
  • Drivers not listed on the policy or without valid licences
  • Cargo losses exceeding policy sub-limits without inland marine endorsement

Exclusions vary by carrier and can sometimes be addressed with endorsements. Ask your advisor.

Common Questions

What clients ask before they bind

My employee drives their own car for work — am I covered?

Hired and non-owned auto (HNOA) coverage extends your liability protection to employee-owned vehicles used for business purposes. Without it, a claim during a work errand could fall back on you.

How do I add a new vehicle mid-term?

Email your advisor. Coverage can typically be bound same-day and the policy is endorsed to include the new unit. Don't wait — a vehicle driven uninsured, even briefly, creates significant exposure.

Does commercial auto cover my tools in the van?

Tools and equipment in the vehicle are generally not covered under auto — they fall under Commercial Property or Inland Marine. Your advisor will ensure the right form covers them.
